Calderano Topples Top Seed in China Smash Top 4 Finish

Just weeks ago at WTT Champions Macao, Hugo Calderano made a statement by taking down tournament top seed Sora Matsushima, now the reigning WR1. At the WTT China Smash he repeated by eliminating top seed Felix Lebrun.

Two top seeds in consecutive events, and Hugo is showing momentum and turning heads. The electric performances of the current world number 7 have been surging, and the results following along.

Opening the tournament with a trio of 3-0 wins, it certainly looked like he was in fine form. Avenging his early 2026 loss against Ovtcharov in the opener, he continued on to dominate An Jaehyun and then Patrick Franziska. This setup a quarterfinal appearance against top seed Felix Lebrun.

The games were close, but Hugo's assertive play and confidence gave him the edge. The two have gone head to head 11 times dating back to 2024, with Felix the favourite going into the match. Hugo's last win came in mid 2025 at Star Contender Ljubljana, an event which he won.

Hugo put on some outstanding spectator displays, covering some incredible distances to get to the ball and stay in rallies. His shotmaking was a highlight, and he closed the match out one game at a time. 4-1 the end score and he was heading to the semifinal.

The semifinal with Lin Yun-Ju was going to be a tough battle. Calderano had won on one previous occasion, but in his current form he was certainly a danger to any player left in the draw. The fans online around the world were urging him on, as he stepped ever closer to the goal.

A strong start into the match and Hugo led 2-0 in games, both narrowly clutched 11-9 under immense pressure. The momentum shifted back in the other direction and Lin was able to flip the tables to lead 3-2.

Hugo mustered a statement in the 6th, dominating to tie and force a deciding 7th game.

Unfortunately it was not to be this time, with the 4-3 result going the way of Lin. In the final Sora awaited and claimed his second Smash title of the year.

No doubt a heartbreaking result for Hugo, who is still fighting hard to claim the bigger WTT titles. With a WTT Champions Macao Final reached just weeks ago, and now the semifinal in WTT China Smash, things are certainly looking up.

Hugo is looking refreshed, confident and is moving and executing shots in ways that have always made him stand out as an athlete in his career.

With Champions Montpellier and Frankfurt just around the corner, let's see what Hugo Calderano can bring to the table next!
