Certified Mastermind
Bursting onto the pickleball scene in his first full year on the PPA Tour at just 16, John Lucan Goins shocked the sport by edging out the G.O.A.T., Ben Johns, in three games at the Cape Coral Open. This summer, he proved he’s not a fluke but the future, claiming back-to-back singles gold at PPA Bristol and PPA Vegas.
JOOLA’s Certified Mastermind owes his cerebral style to the game of chess. By visualizing the board on the pickleball court, he’s able to strategically move opponents and set up his next play. With patience, each move flows seamlessly, like the queen gliding across the board, while his opponents become mere pawns.
“I am a certified mastermind because I am always learning, both on and off the pickleball court,” said Goins. “The same is true for chess, as I am always trying to improve my knowledge and skills. I take the same approach to my pickleball game.”
With the wingspan of a condor and the mind of a grandmaster, he uses his reach and positioning to maneuver opponents, patiently setting traps with precise, calculated shots. Then, with one fluid strike, he extends his two-handed backhand around the post and drives the ball at his stunned opponent’s feet. Checkmate!
