The Hyperion CFS: Where JOOLA’s Pickleball Journey Began

The Hyperion CFS: Where JOOLA’s Pickleball Journey Began

The Hyperion CFS holds a special place in JOOLA’s history. Released in 2022, it marked the brand’s first true performance pickleball paddle and the beginning of its long-term collaboration with Ben Johns. What started as a design partnership quickly became the foundation for JOOLA’s future innovations.

This reintroduction of the Hyperion CFS brings back the paddle that started it all, now refreshed with updated graphics and two clean, modern colorways. While the look has evolved, the story and engineering behind it remain central to what makes the paddle so respected today.

How the Original Hyperion Was Built

When JOOLA and Ben Johns first teamed up, the goal was not to chase trends; it was simply to build a paddle that would create a new standard in performance. A paddle worthy of the G.O.A.T. himself.

Creating the Hyperion CFS - Ben's POV
“The first Hyperion CFS was developed from wanting a paddle with spin, stability, and feel in one build. We tested different faces, core builds, and shapes through a long prototype cycle until we reached this final design, which then became my very first signature paddle with JOOLA.”

Industry Gen 2 Technology

The original Hyperion CFS was also part of what became known across the pickleball industrty as Gen 2 technology, a major shift in how modern paddles were built.

Gen 2 paddles generally include:

  • Thermoformed construction, where heat is used to fuse layers for durability
  • A carbon-fiber perimeter, helping with stability and long-term feel
  • Foam-injected edges, increasing forgiveness and the size of the sweet spot
  • Balanced all-court performance, making the paddle versatile rather than specialized

The Hyperion CFS and the Perseus were two of the paddles that helped establish JOOLA as a leader in this construction style. Later models such as the Scorpeus and Perseus C2 continued building on this foundation.

According to Ben:
“The Gen 2 Hyperion CFS is a reliable paddle for a wide variety of players, particularly those with tennis backgrounds, due to the shape of the paddle head. Its shape allows you to maneuver ground strokes particularly well with a refined stroke. It fits the play of controlled-aggressive players, which is how I would term my own style.”

Why Choose the Hyperion CFS?

Hyperion CFS remains popular because it offers players:
  • Reliable spin from the Carbon Friction Surface
  • A comfortable blend of control and power
  • Stable handling in both slow and fast exchanges
  • A head shape familiar to tennis players
  • Consistency from shot to shot

Hyperion CFS is a excellent option as one of JOOLA's PRO level paddles for those ready to invest in their game and start crafting their playstyle.

It’s a paddle designed around practical performance rather than extremes, which is why so many players, from beginners to experienced competitors, continue to enjoy it.
