PPA Tucson Recap: Upsets, Breakthroughs, and Dominant Performances

The PPA Tour’s stop in Tucson delivered thrilling matches, surprising upsets, and dominant performances across all brackets. From Ben Johns debuting a new men’s doubles partnership to Tom Evans making waves in singles, here’s how the action unfolded.

Men’s Doubles: Alshon & Daescu Claim the Crown

The men’s doubles bracket saw a major shake-up, with Andrei Daescu and Christian Alshon (4) taking the title after an impressive run. The duo stunned top seeds Ben Johns & Hayden Patriquin in the semifinals before overpowering Gabe Tardio & JW Johnson in the final (13-11, 11-2, 11-6).

Rafa Hewett & Noe Khlif (13) made a surprising deep run, knocking out Pablo Tellez & Dylan Frazier in the Round of 16 and advancing to the semis, where they fell to Tardio & Johnson. Johns & Patriquin rebounded to claim bronze, defeating Hewett & Khlif (11-4, 11-6).

Notable: This was Johns’ first tournament playing with a different partner after splitting from his brother.

Women’s Singles: Parris Todd Takes Command

Parris Todd (5) was on fire in the women’s singles bracket, securing dominant victories over Lea Jansen (11-3, 11-1) and Brooke Buckner (11-2, 12-14, 11-9) before dispatching top seed Kaitlyn Christian in the final (11-2, 11-3). Kate Fahey secured the bronze with a solid win over Buckner (11-7, 11-1).

Men’s Singles: Hunter Johnson Reigns Supreme

Hunter Johnson (3) put on a stellar performance, taking down Dylan Frazier (11-8, 11-6) in the semifinals before cruising past Christian Alshon (11-7, 11-2) in the final.

One of the biggest shocks of the tournament came early, as newly signed PPA Tour player Tom Evans (37) stunned top seed Federico Staksrud in the Round of 32 (11-2, 5-11, 11-8). However, his run was cut short in the Round of 16 by Eric Roddy (11-8, 7-11, 11-2). Frazier battled through to claim bronze, edging out Jack Sock in a tight three-set match (11-7, 11-13, 11-9).

Women’s Doubles: Waters & Parenteau Dominate

Catherine Parenteau & Anna Leigh Waters (1) once again proved why they are the top-ranked women’s doubles team, steamrolling the competition on their way to the title. They took down Anna Bright & Rachel Rohrabacher in the final (11-0, 11-2, 11-4) in a commanding performance.

Parris Todd & Tyra Black fought their way to the bronze medal, defeating Meghan Dizon & Etta Tuionetoa (11-2, 11-4).

Mixed Doubles: Johns & Waters Continue Their Reign

Ben Johns & Anna Leigh Waters (1) showed why they are the premier mixed doubles duo, winning the title in straight sets against Christian Alshon & Tyra Black (11-8, 11-8, 11-5).

Kate Fahey & Dylan Frazier (16) emerged as the surprise team of the tournament, taking down top-seeded Federico Staksrud & Catherine Parenteau in the Round of 16 (11-9, 11-7) and advancing all the way to the semifinals before falling to Johns & Waters. They regrouped to claim bronze over JW Johnson & Maggie Brascia (11-8, 11-6).
