Ben Johns Back on Top: PPA Atlanta Recap
PPA Atlanta Open:
The PPA Tour continued its season by visiting Atlanta, Georgia for the PPA Atlanta Open. Due to this tournament being a grand slam, the stakes were higher for players entering the draws. The draws mostly saw top seeds dominating, with some thrilling upsets sprinkled in.
Men's Doubles:
In the Men's Doubles category at the PPA Atlanta Open, Ben Johns and Collin Johns advanced from the quarterfinals by defeating Andrei Daescu and Gabe Tardio 11-7, 11-5. However, they were bested in the semifinals by Matt Wright and Federico Staksrud, who won decisively 11-5, 11-3. The other semifinal saw Dylan Frazier and JW Johnson overpower Tyson McGuffin and Dekel Bar 11-3, 11-2. The finals were a hard-fought battle where Frazier and Johnson emerged victorious against Wright and Staksrud with scores of 4-11, 11-3, 11-7, 11-5. In the bronze match, McGuffin and Bar narrowly edged out the Johns brothers 11-5, 4-11, 12-10.
Men's Singles:
As the first tournament falling to the #2 seed, Ben Johns was hungry to take back his reign as #1. Meanwhile, Federico Stakrsud, new world #1, continued his dominance in the singles field by making his tenth straight singles final. Federico Staksrud dominated Christian Alshon in the semifinals 11-0, 11-4. Ben Johns had a closer contest against Tyson McGuffin, winning 11-5, 13-11. The finals saw Johns secure the PPA Atlanta Open title by defeating Staksrud 11-3, 11-7.
Women's Doubles:
Next up at the PPA Atlanta Open was Women's Doubles. The Women's Doubles category featured Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau beating Etta Wright and Meghan Dizon 11-8, 11-5 in the semifinals. Jade Kawamoto and Andrea Koop clinched their semifinal spot against Lea Jansen and Callie Smith in a tight match, winning 11-8, 4-11, 12-10. In the finals, Waters and Parenteau triumphed over Kawamoto and Koop with scores of 11-9, 11-2, 11-8. Jansen and Smith took the bronze after defeating Wright and Dizon 11-8, 4-11, 11-5.
Women's Singles:
The Women's Singles field at the PPA Atlanta Open saw Anna Leigh Waters continue her dominance. Anna Leigh Waters dominated Lea Jansen in the semifinals 11-0, 11-2. Meanwhile, Parris Todd defeated Salome Devidze 11-3, 11-5. The final was a nail-biter, with Waters ultimately overcoming Todd 12-10, 10-12, 11-5.
Mixed Doubles:
Concluding the PPA Atlanta Open was the Mixed Doubles Category. Mixed Doubles saw Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns dispatch Jorja Johnson and JW Johnson 11-3, 11-4 in the semifinals. Simultaneously, Anna Bright and James Ignatowich defeated Rachel Rohrabacher and Federico Staksrud 11-5, 11-7. Waters and Johns clinched the mixed doubles title by defeating Bright and Ignatowich 11-7, 11-9, 0-11, 11-3.
