Calderano Claims Gold at ITTF-Americas Cup 2026
The battle for World Cup qualification put some dazzling displays of high level table tennis in focus at the ITTF-Americas Cup 2026. On center court at 888 Table Tennis Center in San Francisco, Team JOOLA players gathered from across the continent to fight for their place in Macao.
While a troop of JOOLA athletes fought through the rounds, it was the Olympic experience of World Cup Champion Hugo Calderano, and 4-time US Olympian Lily Zhang that led them deeper through the draws.
Calderano was out to defend his title, not only the reigning Pan Am Cup champion - but also 2025 World Cup Champion - a man with both everything and nothing left to prove. Zhang on the other hand, a 2017 Pan Am Cup gold medalist with a total of three finals appearances, including 2025.
The road to the finals saw some excellent displays. Calderano was a force to be reckoned with as he fought his way past Team JOOLA's NextGen star Emmanuel Otalvaro, then locked in a dominant victory over Argentina's Horacio Cifuentes to reach the final.
Zhang was looking in fine form as she ousted long-time North American rival Mo Zhang to reach the penultimate round.
The women's singles final was a determined battle of wills, with Zhang taking on compatriot Amy Wang. From the first point in play the match was a high-octane clash of speed and long rallies. Zhang's laser focus came through in the longer rallies as she combined sharp counters with exceptional placements. Wang, a calm demeanor, snapping counters with amazing precision.
Wang had early momentum, but Zhang settled in and pushed a 1-3 game deficit to a deciding 7 games. It was a match befitting of a continental cup final, going down to the wire. Zhang had left it all out on the table, giving it all to capture games 5 and 6 to tie things up. Wang didn't crumble under the pressure and put everything on the line in the 7th to claim her first crown. Perhaps a disappointing finish for Zhang, who walked away with silver - however a performance which left spectators and fans alike buzzing.
With Zhang's ticket in hand for the 2026 ITTF World Cup in Macao, the focus shifted to Brazil's Hugo Calderano.
With a world ranking of 3rd, on paper he was certainly the favorite. His opponent - USA's Kanak Jha, had raised the bar and gotten the better of him in their last encounter in 2025, Calderano was looking to set the record straight.
The games were decided by the closest of margins, Calderano showing his prowess in the most extreme of crucial moments.
Things began to fall into place as his confidence soared. The impeccable short game, world class stability - and above all the mindblowing power, all aligned at the perfect moments.
Capitalizing on game point opportunities he reeled off extremely powerful forehands close to the table, blitzing inside out shots and hammering home backhand loops from the back of the court. Jha continued to pressure his opponent and force out his best as the scorelines remained tight.
Calderano was winning in the tightest moments, and the game score reflected it. He continued to push ahead in the best of 7 match. When the match point opportunity presented itself, Calderano slapped home a winner to seal the deal.
Gold.
A fine display of all of the reasons why Hugo Calderano is a fan favorite in the sport.
Congratulations to Hugo and Lily on their finals performances, and to all our Team JOOLA players who gave it their all at the event!
Bring on Macao!
