The stands were packed. The atmosphere was kinetic. Hugo Calderano was fighting for the WTT Star Contender São José dos Campos 2026. It was as if the whole of Brazil had packed their supportive energy into one room, around one table. 

The early rounds had been fairly comfortable, notable on the road to the final was Hugo's decisive 3-0 win against Oh Junsung in the quaterfinal. The Brazilian fans, and Hugo fans worldwide we riding the wave. 

Then came the challenge. The semifinal. Match points had to be saved. A spirited Uda Yukiya of Japan. Left handed, lightning fast. Deadly backhand flick receive. The match went down to the wire. Hugo fought speed with speed. Uda seemed to have the upper hand as the end of games neared, he fought back from deficits in game 2 and 3 to win 17-15 and 14-12. Hugo, willed on by the home crowd, hung on to the match. 

The fourth game was an adrenaline packed, nerve-wracking, emotional rollercoaster, as both players tried to seal the game. Uda held match points, Calderano fought them off. Game points came for the Brazilian, but Uda stood firm. 21-19 the end score, a trip down memory lane to the days of old. 

In the end Hugo would prevail. He was ready to face off with number 2 seed Alexis Lebrun of France in the final. 

Although Hugo held a 6-0 historical record against the Frenchman, Lebrun had stacked up some solid performances to reach the final, and at the penultimate stage he brought everything he had. 

The rallies were electric. Lebruns rapid backhand attack was a key factor, with both players piling on the pressure to back each other away from the table. 

Hugo made a major breakthrough in the 4th to give himself a 3-1 lead in the best of 7 game clash. The crowd cheered him on, a magical contrast of total silence and roaring applause when the points landed. 

Lebrun fought the noise and dialed in the focus. He claimed game 5 comfortably, and doubled down to take game 6 and force a decider. 

In the 7th Hugo made a big push and raced out to a 6-2 lead, leaning into his signature power game off both wings to get through his opponent. If anyone felt comfortable with the lead, a Lebrun timeout and turnaround quickly soured the moment, as he tied it up at 6-6. 

As 9-9 came around you could feel the tension in the room. Fans sat with hands over faces, nervously sending quiet prayers to the universe to deliver for their golden home favourite. 

A sequence of short pushes ensued with Hugo against serve. Lebrun made the first move, but Hugo's counter was on point. 

Match point in hand, Hugo unleashed everything he had left. A blistering backhand, followed by two mighty step around forehands. It was done. 

The crowd erupted. Hugo fell backwards to the ground. Triumph. 

11-9 in the 7th. Hugo took the crown in front of his beloved home audience. 

A thrilling ride, exceptional matches, and a fairytale finish from Hugo Calderano. Hundreds lined up for his autograph session after the trophy presentation, everybody wanted to share a moment with their legend. Hugo Calderano. One of One.
