Five Things: Table Tennis vs. Pickleball

Long before JOOLA become an innovator in Pickleball we were cutting our teeth in the world of Table Tennis

Cross-over with us from the table to the court and back as we share five similarities and differences between Table Tennis and Pickleball.

Did we miss anything? Let us know in the comment section below.

5 Similarities

  1. Paddle-Based Games:
    • Both sports use paddles to strike the ball. In table tennis, the paddles are smaller and made of wood with rubber; in pickleball, they are larger, typically made of composite materials.
  2. Focus on Spin and Control:
    • Spin and precise control of the ball are crucial in both games. Advanced players in both sports use spins strategically to outmaneuver opponents.
  3. Singles and Doubles Formats:
    • Both table tennis and pickleball can be played in singles or doubles formats, offering flexibility for participants.
  4. Fast Paced and Strategic:
    • Both sports are quick-paced and require strategic thinking, reflexes, and agility to outplay opponents.
  5. Popular for All Ages:
    • Both sports are inclusive and enjoyed by a wide age range, making them accessible recreationally and competitively.

5 Differences

  1. Court Size:
    • Table Tennis: Played on a 9 ft x 5 ft table with a small net.
    • Pickleball: Played on a much larger court (20 ft x 44 ft), similar in size to a badminton court.
  2. Playing Environment:
    • Table Tennis: Typically played indoors with controlled conditions.
    • Pickleball: Often played outdoors, which can introduce weather and environmental variables.
  3. Ball Type:
    • Table Tennis: Uses a small, lightweight, celluloid or plastic ball.
    • Pickleball: Uses a larger, plastic wiffle-style ball with holes.
  4. Paddle Size and Design:
    • Table Tennis: Paddles are smaller, with specific rubber surfaces to create spin.
    • Pickleball: Paddles are larger, flat, and designed for power and control but not rubber-coated.
  5. Scoring:
    • Table Tennis: Played to 11 points (win by 2), with alternating serves every 2 points.
    • Pickleball: Played to 11 points in most cases (win by 2), but only the serving side can score points, and the serving rules are unique to the sport.
