New Partnerships Upset at PPA Newport Doubles Shootout

New Partnerships Upset at PPA Newport Doubles Shootout

The PPA Tour returned to Newport Beach, California for the Newport Beach Doubles Shootout. Being a “Doubles Shootout” there were no singles brackets being played out this weekend. Even without singles play, all eyes were on the finals as CBS aired the Championship matches for all three remaining events.Tournament play kicked off with Mixed Doubles on Friday morning. With Anna Leigh Waters missing from the playing field, Ben Johns teamed up with Andrea Koop to capture the #1 seed in the bracket. Johns/Koop cruised their way into the quarterfinals and a Johns sibling battle, overtaking Collin Johns and Callie Smith in three sets, 11-3, 9-11, 11-1. However, Johns/Koop could not keep their momentum going as they were met with the new partnership of Tyson McGuffin and Lacy Schneemann. McGuffin/Schneemann made their way into the semis with a quarterfinal victory over the duo of James Ignatowich and Anna Bright, 11-7, 12-10, before beating Johns/Koop in straight sets 11-6, 11-8 to make their way to the finals. On the other half of the bracket, the sibling duo of JW Johnson and Jorja Johnson took out the #2 seed of Matt Wright and Lucy Kovalova in the quarterfinals and secured their spot in the finals with a two-set win over Riley Newman and Allyce Jones. Rather than having the finals played on Championship Sunday, the entirety of the mixed doubles draw was played out on Friday. The sibling duo of Johnson/Johnson proved to be too solid for the new partnership of McGuffin/Schneemann, with the Johnsons taking the Championship in straight sets, 11-9, 11-7.Gender doubles followed on Saturday, with upsets happening early in the day. The #1 seed of Ben Johns and Collin Johns dropped their first loss of the season in the second round to the duo of Ben Newell and Phillip Locklear. After their big win, Newell/Locklear dropped their next round to the young blood of Gabriel Tardio and Garrett Whitehead as they made their way into the semis. Tardio/Whitehead were met by JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier who proved to be too much to handle as Johnson/Frazier made their way into Championship Sunday 11-1, 11-3. On the other half of the bracket, Federico Staksrud and Pablo Tellez (11) took out the six seed of Tyson McGuffin and James Ignatowich in the second round, and then went on to beat the three seed of Callan Dawson and Tyler Loong to make it to the semis. In the semis, the two seed and veteran team of Riley Newman and Matt Wright had their way with Staksrud/Tellez, beating them 11-7, 11-7 as they made their way to Championship Sunday. With opportunity knocking for both teams with the duo of Johns/Johns missing, both Johnson/Frazier and Newman/Wright were hungry for gold. However, the duo of Johnson/Frazier proved to want it more – with a straight three set victory to take home the Championship. The Women’s Doubles brackets featured less upsets but more controversy as the day went on. The one seed of Lucy Kovalova and Callie Smith cruised their way into the semis where they faced off against Lacy Schneemann and Lina Padegimaite. Kovalova/Smith were initially lined up to play Sarah Ansboury and Jill Braverman after Ansboury/Braverman defeated Schneemann/Padegimaite in the quarterfinals. However, after testing all four players paddles, the paddle of Ansboury was deemed illegal – disqualifying them from tournament play. Unphased, Kovalova and Smith toppled Schneemann/Padegimaite in the semis 11-3, 11-9 to make their way to Championship Sunday. On the other half of the draw, Yana Grechkina and Lauren Stratman upset the two seed of Lea Jansen and Allyce Jones to make their way into the semis against Andrea Koop and Anna Bright. In the semifinal match, Koop/Bright cruised their way into the finals with a 11-5, 11-6 victory over Grechkina/Stratman. The finals were evenly matched as both teams competed back and forth for almost three hours of play. However, Kovalova/Smith had the edge as they earned gold over Koop/Bright, 7-11, 11-7, 13-11, 11-3.The PPA Tour will head to the East Coast in North Carolina for their next stop, May 4-7.Medals:Ben Johns: Mixed Doubles – BronzeLacy Schneemann: Mixed Doubles – SilverAnna Bright: Women’s Doubles – SilverFederico Staksrud: Men’s Doubles – BronzeEquipment: Lacy Schneemann – Simone Jardim Hyperion CFS 14 SwiftAnna Bright – Solaire CFS 14Allyce Jones – Solaire CFS 14 SwiftLea Jansen – Solaire CFS 14
