Beer City Open Recap

Sibling Partnerships Prevail in Beer City

The Beer City Open took place this past weekend in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Beer City Open is one of the largest tournaments of the year that isn’t attached to a professional tour stop. BCO is put together and ran by professional player, Andrea Koop, who is a native to the area. This year was another successful year as many professional players made their way out to Michigan to battle through the heat and the intermittent rain. With many of the dominating players missing, it allowed for new faces and new partnerships on the top of the medal stand.Thursday:Play kicked off on Thursday with Men’s and Women’s Singles getting things into action. For the men’s draw, Jay Devilliers made his way to the quarterfinals before dropping to newcomer Jaume Martinez Vich in a tight three-set match in the semifinals (11-6, 5-11, 0-11). Connor Garnett made his way past Jack Foster and Dylan Frazier in the quarterfinals and semifinals to also make his way into the finals. Garnett and Martinez Vich battled in what could be one of the best singles matches of the year, but Garnett was able to come away with the gold, winning 11-8, 9-11, 11-6. In Women’s Singles, Jorja Johnson made her way to the finals, but not before a tight three-set battle against Irina Tereschenko in the semifinals. Jessie Irvine, a rare singles player, also made her way to the semifinals before dropping to Hurricane Tyra Black. With both players fighting through injuries, Johnson was able to close out as she took gold over Black, 9-11, 11-9, 12-10.Friday:In Mixed Doubles play, the Johnson siblings of JW and Jorja cruised their way into Championship Sunday without dropping a game on their way. On the other half of the draw, Lauren Stratman and Dylan Frazier also made their way to the finals, again without dropping a game. Stratman/Frazier faced Ewa Radzikowska and Pablo Tellez in the quarterfinals before beating the duo of Zane Navratil and Jessie Irvine in the semifinals. On Championship Sunday, the sibling partners had too much court chemistry, as they came away with the victory over Stratman/Frazier, 13-11, 11-9.Saturday:In Women’s Doubles we saw another sibling partnership seeing success as Jade and Jackie Kawamoto won two tight matches to make their way into the finals. Kawamoto/Kawamoto fought past Judit Castillo and Ewa Radzikowska in the quarterfinals before taking out Lauren Stratman and Jorja Johnson in the semifinals. Lacy Schneemann and Hurricane Tyra Black had an easier time on their side of the bracket due to the withdrawal of Andrea Koop and Jessie Irvine to also claim their spot in Championship Sunday. In another extremely tight matchup, the siblings came out on top again, with the Kawamotos beating Schneemann/Black 8-11, 13-11, 11-9. In men’s play, Dylan Frazier and JW Johnson cruised past Andrei Daescu and Rob Nunnery in the semifinals to claim their spot in the finals. Pablo Tellez and Federico Staksrud made their way to the semifinals, before dropping to Connor Garnett and Rafa Hewett 6-11, 8-11. With many medals under their belt, Frazier/Johnson proved to be too strong for the new partnership of Hewett/Garnett as they took gold in straight games, 11-4, 11-2.The next event of the tournament season will be the PPA Seattle Open, happening 7/27-7/30 in Seattle, Washington.Medal List:Lacy Schneemann – Silver, Women’s DoublesEquipment List:Lacy Schneemann – Ben Johns Perseus CFS 14Ewa Radzikowska – Ben Johns Perseus CFS 16Federico Staksrud – Anna Bright Scorpeus CFS 14
