Simone Continues Undefeated Streak in New York City
It was a big weekend for pickleball as the APP Tour returned to New York City for the APP NYC Open. The venue for this tournament is none other than the USTA National Tennis Center, home of the US Open for professional tennis. At such a renowned venue, new players tried to make a name for themselves while the more experienced players aimed to continue their success.Singles began on Thursday with quite the breakout happening in the Men’s Singles draw. Wolf Velickovic not only made his way out of the qualifier but remained undefeated on the day as he made his way to Championship Sunday. Velickovic defeated Hunter Johnson, John Cincola, and William Sobek on his way to the finals, before having to play Sobek again on Sunday. Velickovic dropped the 2/3 and was forced to play a tiebreaker game to 15. Velickovic led 14-6 in the tiebreaker, but dropped the next ten points against Sobek to earn silver, as Sobek claimed his first APP gold. On the women’s side there were significantly fewer upsets, as the top three seeds claimed their respective spots on the podium. Salome Devidze took the gold over Megan Fudge, while Judit Castillo fought her way to bronze.In mixed doubles, Susannah Barr continued her hot streak as she teamed up with Rob Nunnery to earn their spot in winner bracket finals, taking out Parris Todd and Hunter Johnson in the process. Barr/Nunnery eventually came up against the righty/lefty combo of Simone Jardim and Stefan Auvergne, falling in straight sets 11-3, 11-5. In the backdraw, Barr/Nunnery defeated Maggie Remynse and Andrei Daescu in the bronze medal match to make their way back into Championship Sunday to rematch Jardim/Auvergne. Another tiebreaker game to 15 was forced, this time with Barr/Nunnery prevailing 16-14.In Women’s Doubles, Parris Todd and Simone Jardim continued their dominance on the season, claiming their sixth straight gold medal together. Jardim/Todd faced Alix Truong and Megan Fudge in the finals, prevailing 11-4, 11-5. Riley Bohnert and Emily Ackerman teamed up for the first time to take third. On the men’s side, Rob Nunnery and Andrei Daescu didn’t drop a game as they made their way to Championship Sunday while the brother duo of Hunter and Yates Johnson fought their way out of the back draw and back into the finals. Johnson/Johnson took out Brendon Long and John Cincola in the bronze medal match before dropping in the finals to Nunnery/Daescu 11-6, 12-10.The APP Tour heads to the West coast for their next tournament of the season, with the APP Newport Beach Open occurring 6/28-7/3.Equipment List:Simone Jardim: Simone Jardim Hyperion CFS 16 Swift
