Simone Goes Six Straight in Cincinnati

Simone Goes Six Straight in Cincinnati

The APP returned to Cincinnati, Ohio this past weekend for the APP Vlasic Classic. Through some rainy conditions, play was divided up between Sawyer Park and a new indoor facility, ACES Pickleball.Professional play begun on Thursday morning with Men’s and Women’s Singles taking action. On the men’s side, things were business as usual as the Johnson brothers, Hunter and Yates, secured their usual spot in the finals. In the finals, Yates Johnson (2) was able to upset his brother by winning the 2/3 and the tiebreaker to 15. However, on the women’s side, play was opened up to others as former APP gold medalist, Parris Todd, chose to sit this one out. With Parris out of the draw, one-seed, Salome Devidze made her spot to the finals alongside Jenna Hessert. After a huge ran by Hessert into the finals, Devidze was proved to be too strong, as Devidze secured gold 11-2, 11-6.Mixed doubles ensued on Friday, with some new partnerships making their debut. Susannah Barr and Rob Nunnery took out Parris Todd and Hunter Johnson in their half of the draw to make their way to the finals. On the other half of the draw, the new partnership of Andrei Daescu and Alix Truong took out Jayden Broderick and Lee Whitwell to secure their spot in the winner bracket finals, before dropping to Nunnery/Barr. Daescu/Truong were able to work their way back through the backdraw to secure their spot in Championship Sunday where they double-dipped Nunnery/Barr to take home the gold.In Men’s Doubles we saw some new partneships on the podium as the duo of Johnson/Johnson dropped early in the draw. Brendon Long teamed up with John Cincola on the top half of the draw and made their way to the winner bracket finals. There they would team up against and eventually take their first loss to the duo of Andrei Daescu and Rob Nunnery. Cincola/Long made their way back through the back draw, taking out Andre Mick and Jason McNulty in the bronze medal match to work their way back into Championship Sunday. However, Daescu/Nunnery continued their undefeated streak, defeating Long/Cincola in the gold medal match. In Women’s Doubles we saw similar trends as partnerships that have performed well in the past continued their hot streak. The pair of Simone Jardim and Parris Todd secured their sixth straight gold medal as a partnership, making them undefeated for the season. Susannah Barr and Megan Fudge came up second again, unable to defeat the power duo of Jardim/Todd. Alix Truong and Milan Rane were able to secure the bronze. The APP will continue play in New York City for the Boca Raton 2023 APP the week of May 23.Equipment:Simone Jardim – Simone Jardim Hyperion CFS 16 SwiftMilan Rane – Solaire CFS 14 Medals:Simone Jardim – Gold, Women’s DoublesMilan Rane – Bronze, Women’s Doubles
