Thrilling Upsets and Dominant Performances Shine at the PPA Virginia Beach Open

Men’s Doubles

In a highly competitive division, Ben Johns and Collin Johns advanced to the finals after defeating Rafa Hewitt and Riley Newman in three sets, 11-2, 4-11, 11-6. Meanwhile, Federico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin pulled off an upset, overcoming JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier 7-11, 11-6, 11-5. In a dramatic five-set final, Staksrud and Patriquin stunned the Johns brothers, rallying to win 11-9, 6-11, 3-11, 11-8, 11-2, capturing the men’s doubles title.

Men’s Singles

Ben Johns continued his dominance in singles, defeating Jaume Martinez Vich 11-1, 11-8 in the semis and taking down Hunter Johnson in the finals 11-5, 11-9 to secure the title. Johnson earned his spot in the final with a 11-7, 11-6 win over Federico Staksrud. Jaume Martinez Vich claimed bronze by defeating Staksrud 13-11, 11-8.

Women’s Doubles

Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau delivered a commanding performance, defeating Lea Jansen and Callie Smith in the semis 11-5, 11-6, and cruising past Anna Bright and Rachel Rohrabacher in the final 11-2, 11-7, 11-4 to win the title. Bright and Rohrabacher earned their final berth with an 11-7, 11-2 win over Jorja Johnson and Mari Humberg.

Women’s Singles

Anna Leigh Waters showcased her skill in singles as well, securing the title with a hard-fought victory over Brooke Buckner in the final 9-11, 11-9, 11-6. Waters reached the final after defeating Kate Fahey 11-6, 11-2, while Buckner took down Kaitlyn Christian 11-9, 11-0 in the semis. Kate Fahey grabbed the bronze medal, defeating Christian 11-5, 11-2.

Mixed Doubles

The duo of Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns showed their unbeatable chemistry, defeating Jackie Kawamoto and Riley Newman in the semis 11-6, 11-0 before taking down Jorja and JW Johnson in a four-set final 11-7, 11-7, 10-12, 11-3. Kawamoto and Newman went on to win the bronze medal, edging out Tina Pisnik and Dekel Bar 11-4, 9-11, 11-6.

The PPA Virginia Beach Open was filled with high-octane matches, solidifying the reign of familiar champions while also giving rise to new contenders.
