Intense Battles and New Champions Emerge at PPA Kansas City Open

The PPA Kansas City Open delivered a weekend of high-octane pickleball, with top players battling it out across multiple divisions. Here’s a detailed recap of the key matches and outcomes from the tournament. For a full breakdown of results and scores, click here

Men's Doubles:

In the Men’s Doubles category, Federico Staksrud and Gabe Tardio emerged as the champions after a series of intense matches. They started their journey with a stunning upset in the semifinals, where they defeated the formidable brothers, Ben and Collin Johns, in a hard-fought match with scores of 11-9, 1-11, 11-5. In the finals, Staksrud and Tardio displayed their dominance by defeating JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier in straight sets, 11-4, 11-8, 11-2, to claim the title. Christian Alshon and Hayden Patriquin, who had a strong showing in the quarterfinals and semifinals, ultimately secured the bronze medal.

Men's Singles:

In Men’s Singles, Connor Garnett had a remarkable run to the championship. After a solid performance in the quarterfinals, where he defeated Aanik Lohani, Garnett faced Chris Haworth in a closely contested semifinal match. Garnett managed to edge out Haworth and advanced to the final, where he took on Tyson McGuffin. Despite a tough second game, Garnett powered through to win the match and the title with scores of 11-0, 2-11, 11-2. Chris Haworth, after losing to Garnett in the semifinals, bounced back to claim the bronze medal.

Women's Doubles:

The Women’s Doubles division saw Catherine Parenteau and Anna Leigh Waters dominate the field. They breezed through the semifinals, defeating Jorja Johnson and Mari Humberg with ease. In the finals, Parenteau and Waters continued their strong performance, defeating Lacy Schneemann and Jade Kawamoto in straight sets, 11-6, 11-3, 11-5, to secure the title. Johnson and Humberg went on to win the bronze medal.

Women's Singles:

In a highly competitive Women’s Singles division, Brooke Buckner made a significant impact. After defeating Kaitlyn Christian in the semifinals, Buckner faced Kate Fahey in the final. Kate Fahey overcame the 2nd seed of Lea Jansen in the Round of 32 after making it out of qualifiers. The match was a rollercoaster, with Buckner eventually emerging victorious with scores of 11-5, 4-11, 11-8, claiming her first major title. Mari Humberg secured the bronze medal after a strong showing throughout the tournament.

Mixed Doubles:

The Mixed Doubles final was a nail-biter, featuring Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters against JW Johnson and Jorja Johnson. The match stretched to five games, with Johns and Waters clinching the victory in the decisive fifth game with scores of 11-2, 10-12, 12-10, 6-11, 11-2. Federico Staksrud and Catherine Parenteau secured the bronze, rounding out an exciting mixed doubles competition.
